Ngorongoro Conservation Area Highlands of the giant craters

The NCA covers an area of 8300km² and is a unique association of different ecosystems. Here desert-like savannas meet evergreen mountain forests, the crater floors of the extinct volcanoes are filled with lakes or swampy landscapes.

The Great Rift Valley shaped the surface of the earth. Outside the NCA are the Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Ngare Sero Mountain Gorge and Lake Natron. The Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only active volcano in the crater highlands and the only active volcano in the world that produces carbonatite lava.
