Tanzania

Tanzania is an East African country south of the equator, bordering the Indian Ocean to the east, Kenya and Uganda to the north, Rwanda, Burundi and the DR Congo to the west and Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique to the south.

Around 57 million people (as of 2018), who belong to around 130 different ethnic groups, live on an area of 945,087 km². The national language is Swahili, the official language is English. Wet and dry savannas with umbrella acacias and baobab trees dominate the landscape. Africa's highest mountain range, the Kilimanjaro, rises in the northeast.

Tanzania borders three of the largest lakes in Africa:

  • Lake Victoria in the north
  • Lake Tanganyika in the west
  • Lake Malawi in the south

Maasai

Over 100 years ago, the Maasai ruled almost all of East Africa.

Their warriors, the Moran, were feared and famous for their bravery and theft of cattle. They lived as semi-nomads. Today the Maasai live as a minority in Kenya and Tanzania and have given up their nomadic lifestyle.

However, they still adhere to their customs and traditions and have many rituals that lead people from one stage of life to another.

Each stage gives meaning and purpose to life, a fulfillment that cannot be found in many other cultures.
